Canggu has changed. What used to be rice fields and a few surf camps is now one of the most visited corners of Bali — and for good reason. The food scene, the beaches, the energy. But with popularity comes noise, and a lot of people end up booking the wrong villa in the wrong pocket of the area.

We manage a handful of villas across Canggu and the surrounding neighbourhoods, so this isn't a roundup scraped from a listicle. It's what we'd tell a friend who asked us where to stay.

First: Canggu Is Not One Place

When people say "Canggu," they usually mean a wide stretch of the Badung coastline running from Echo Beach in the south up through Berawa, Pererenan, and into what some call North Canggu. These areas feel genuinely different depending on what you're looking for.

The quick breakdown:

"The best area is the one that matches how you actually want to spend your days — not the one with the most Instagram posts."

What to Look for Before You Book

Most villa listings look identical in photos: white walls, infinity pool, green garden. Here's what actually separates a good stay from a frustrating one.

Pool privacy. Some villas are in compounds where three or four properties share a pool wall. You can hear everything. Ask whether the pool is fully private or shared with neighbours.

WiFi that actually works. Not a concern for a one-week beach holiday. A major concern if you're working remotely. Ask for a speed test screenshot before booking if this matters to you.

Distance to the nearest warungs and cafés. Bali is not a walking city in most areas. A 10-minute scooter ride to get a coffee sounds fine until you want one every morning. Villas within walking distance of at least a few options are worth paying a premium for.

Air conditioning coverage. Sounds obvious. But some villas only have AC in bedrooms, not living areas. In Bali's wet season heat, that matters more than you'd think.

Area Deep Dive: Berawa

Berawa sits between the bustle of Batu Bolong and the quiet of Pererenan. It's our favourite area for first-time visitors who want some energy without being in the thick of it.

The main road (Jl. Pantai Berawa) runs parallel to the beach and connects to Finns Beach Club — which, if you haven't been, is worth one visit. The surrounding villa streets are genuinely attractive: mature trees, less traffic than Batu Bolong, and a good density of restaurants within a short scooter ride.

For villa stays, Berawa delivers a solid mix of size and price. You can find a well-designed 3-bedroom for a group of six without paying the Seminyak premium.

Area Deep Dive: Batu Bolong and Echo Beach

If you want to walk everywhere — to surf, to dinner, to the beach at sunset — this is your area. Batu Bolong has the best street-level energy in Canggu. Old Man's bar, the weekly Echo Beach market, the cluster of great cafés around Jl. Batu Bolong. It's alive in a way the other areas aren't.

The tradeoff is noise and density. Villas here are more likely to be close to the road. Some streets are genuinely loud on weekends. If you're a light sleeper or coming to decompress, factor that in.

For groups of 2–4 who want to spend most of their time out — surf in the morning, cafés in the afternoon, dinner out every night — this is the area.

Area Deep Dive: Pererenan

Pererenan is where you go when you've done Canggu and want the parts Bali is actually famous for — the rice terraces, the slower pace, the feeling of space. The area has been developing but hasn't yet lost the character that makes it worth staying in.

Villas here tend to be bigger compounds at lower prices per bedroom. The catch is you'll need a scooter for almost everything. There's no equivalent of the Batu Bolong street scene within walking distance — but there are some genuinely good local warungs and a growing cluster of cafés opening up on Jl. Pererenan.

Best for: groups of 4+, longer stays (a week or more), people who are genuinely here to relax rather than be in the middle of things.

Practical Tips Before You Book

Book direct when you can. Airbnb and Booking.com take 15–20% from both sides. Many villas — including ours — offer better rates for direct enquiries. Worth asking.

Check the arrival logistics. Bali traffic from the airport can be brutal, especially arriving into peak hours. Most villa hosts will arrange a transfer. Confirm this in advance and ask about their check-in window.

Ask about the housekeeper schedule. Most Bali villas come with daily or every-other-day cleaning. It's worth knowing in advance — both for scheduling and for whether you want people in and out of your villa.

Scooter rental is nearly always worth it. Around 70,000–80,000 IDR per day from a local rental place. Don't rely on Gojek or Grab for everything — the surge pricing during peak hours adds up fast.
